Popular Action Films

Audience

Action films are usually targeted towards thrill seekers. The majority of these films are viewed by a male audience who are aged in the usual cinema going category which is 16-24 however either side of this range there is a smaller proportion of viewers. Through research we found that the majority of action films have a certificate of 12 and above as many of the generic conventions seen in action films aren't appropriate for viewers under this age. The upper limit generally faded out in the elder adult stage as people became less interested in film and as they were less technologically interested. Our audience will consist of people who go to films as a hobby and regular event but also the social going people. As action is one of the most popular genres it means there are a lot of people watching these types of film as a social event with their friends. As action films generally have a diverse cast, it makes it appealing to multiple races. Middle class people are most commonly seen watching films at cinema and therefore it appeals to them as a class. The audience generally have interests in gunfights and adrenaline burst. Financially they will be people from the bracket B and C due to them being able to afford going to the cinema. They are generally mass audience.

History of Action

The first early action films were made in the 1940's and were mainly old cowboy films and war films. In these days the generic conventions were different because they were from a different time period. Instead of having cars and technological there were things like horses etc. In the 1970's action films began to develop as stunts and special effects were introduced along with gritty detective and urban crime dramas started to evolve. Hollywood started to produce some big budget blockbusters in the 1980's that featured the likes of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. CGI became a growing revolution in the 1990's as the western and spy movies continued to be a growing success. During the 2000's action films continued to flourish and science fiction films started to become more popular with films such as star trek introduced. In 2010 film budgets increased and science fiction and superhero films became even more popular with Marvel characters featuring in this genre of film. Current action films feature extensive stunt work and special effects which tend to be very expensive and generic conventions as seen at the top of the page are associated with modern day action films.
