How we will attract an audience

Our film is an action film which is related to drugs and a Prime Minister who does not follow the rules. Our film targets people who high teens and young adults and that are excited by an action film like this. Most of our target audience spend a lot of their time using modern technology and therefore our film will include up to date props and clothing. Our character will be in their mid twenties because it is therefore relatable for the audience watching it as they will be a similar age group. The character in our film will be wearing a suit which is smart wear so it is modern clothing again fits in with our target audience.

In terms of location, our film is located in an office which looks presidential which is important as it fits in with the storyline. The first scenes take place on a conference table before it moves to a large hall where we see the main character talk to a large audience. This is a modern political talk so therefore it seems like a modern world problem. The lighting in all of these scenes is likely to be naturalistic.

All of these are appealing and would attract 16 - 24 year old males because it is relatable for them so they would want to see it as opposed to an older film they may not want to see. The main thing that would attract them would be a main character who they can look up to, this involves the hypodermic needle theory as they might want to be like the main character as he is important and could be seen as a role model for them.

Die Hard is an action movie which has a hero main character. This hero is a similar type character to ours but slightly older. This is something that appeals to the age group we target because they will look up to the main character because he is an everyday policeman who gets caught up in trouble and saves the day. This makes the audience feel like it is possible for them to be a hero and they are influenced positively by it.

Chosen Institutional logo

The five main principles of an effective institutional logo is for it to be simple, memorable, timeless, versatile and appropriate, as a result of this we chose the logo that fit this brief the closest. We chose this institutional logo because we thought it was the most professional looking design that we came up with and therefore, represented a mainstream institution better. The logo that we chose was more appropriate to our target audience than the other design and it also represented the name of our institution better as it the wolf design could be easily identified. The chosen logo had a better colour scheme which could be seen as more eye catching and therefore, will be a more successful institutional logo.

Target Audience And Theories

Audience theories

Hyper-dermic needle theory influences the audience to emulate what is happening in the film for example, the main character may be seen as a role model. This theory could have a negative impact on our target audience as the content in our film is seen as illegal therefore, we do not want our audience being influenced by what happens in the film.

Gratifications theory is where people seek out media to satisfy their needs, once again we do not want our audience watching this for any of the wrong reason but purely for their own entertainment.

Our film can warn the audience/ viewer that what is carried out in the film is illegal and that there are consequences for the main characters actions in hope that the only thing they take away from the film is the dangers of some of the illegal activity within the film.

Audience Questionnaire

The following questionnaire is based on the genre action as we have chosen to do it for our own film opening. The questions will help us to determine our specific target audience and most popular generic conventions in an action film.

Q1) Would you rather watch an action film based on a true story or a fictional one?

Q2) What age rating do you watch the most?
       12
       15
       18

Q3) Who are your favourite actors that usually feature in the genre action?

Q4) What is your favourite genre?

Q5) What generic conventions do you expect from a typical action movie?

Q6) Do you prefer mainstream or independent film?

Q7) How often do you watch action films?

Q8) Do you think sub-genres go well in action films?

Audience Figures and Popular Action Films

Action and adventure together have a combined revenue of $73 billion from 1995 to 2016 which is far bigger than any other genre, with comedy coming second $41 billion. Action on its own had total revenue of $33.3 billion. This is the third most of any genre proving that it is one of the most popular film genres to watch, this is because it is exciting and a mainstream genre that relates to the young people within the 16-24 cinema going age.

The top films from 1989-2013 box office, sky fall came first with £102.9 million in 2012. this film is from the genre action and was very popular, it was part of the James Bond line of films, this was double what the previous James Bond film received in the box office.

All of these charts show that action is a top movie genre by sales and views. It is in the top 3 of all of these charts which connotes that it is a top popular genre. This allows us to have a wider target audience as more people want to go and watch this genre. However because there are so many films in this genre it is hard to be original so therefore a lot of the action films are similar and have similarities from various different action films.

Independent Research On Film Openings

The film opening (American Sniper) is a drama but has elements of action in it as this was another possible genre we thought of doing as our film opening. It begins with the institutional logo which was mainstream in this case and was a Warner Bros film. Following on from this there are two more institutional logos which come after the main production company. The first title that appears says Warner Bros. Pictures Presents which proves that this production company is the main producer of the film. The last title to appear is the name of the film which lasts for 4 seconds. This is unusual because usually the directors name comes last, this gives us the option to emulate this structure.
This is slightly longer than any other title because it is the most important. The opening is edited so that each shot is mainly faded into the next one as a transition however there are occasional cuts. This is simple and the editing is slow paced in this opening. Throughout the opening scene there are a variety of shots used such as low and high angle shots as well as a tracking shot used to follow the tank and some of the other vehicles to make the audience feel as if they are there. Mise en scene is seen to be the usual generic conventions of an action for example there is military uniforms and guns seen within the opening, setting the scene of a normal film.

The purpose of analysing this film opening was to gain further knowledge on how film openings work and their structure. We were able to have more practice on how title sequences work and we can now clearly identify key generic conventions and codes that are appropriate to our chosen genre.
